Packet size - 1kg

Meldon Seeds White Mustard Green Manure Seeds produce a fast-growing brassica cover crop valued for rapid biomass production, weed suppression, and soil biofumigation properties. White mustard establishes quickly, forming dense growth that shades out weeds while adding substantial organic matter when incorporated into the soil.

When chopped and incorporated, white mustard releases natural compounds that can help suppress certain soil-borne pests and diseases, making it especially useful in crop rotations for vegetables. Its quick growth habit makes it an excellent choice for short planting windows, fall cover cropping, or rapid soil improvement between crops.

Key Benefits

  • Extremely fast germination and growth

  • Suppresses weeds through dense canopy formation

  • Adds large amounts of organic matter

  • Natural biofumigation effect when incorporated

  • Helps reduce erosion and protect soil surface

  • Ideal for short rotations and fall cover cropping

How to Use White Mustard as a Green Manure

1. When to Plant

  • Spring: Plant as soon as soil can be worked.

  • Late summer to early autumn: Sow 4–6 weeks before first frost.

  • White mustard tolerates cool weather but is typically killed by hard frost.

2. Soil Preparation

  • Remove existing weeds and crop residue.

  • Lightly cultivate or rake soil to create a fine, firm seedbed.

  • White mustard performs best in well-drained soils but is adaptable.

3. Seeding Rate

  • Broadcast at approximately 500 g per 100 sq metres

  • Rake seeds into the soil ¼–½ inch deep and firm soil for good seed-to-soil contact.

4. Watering

  • Water after planting if soil is dry.

  • Germination typically occurs within 3–7 days under favorable conditions.

5. Growth & Management

  • Plants grow rapidly and can reach full size in 4–6 weeks.

  • For best results, manage before flowering for tender growth and faster decomposition.

6. Termination & Incorporation

  • Mow, chop, or till plants into the soil while still green.

  • For biofumigation benefits, finely chop plant material and incorporate immediately.

  • Water soil after incorporation and allow 2–3 weeks before planting the next crop.

Tips for Best Results

  • Do not allow plants to go to seed unless reseeding is desired.

  • Avoid planting white mustard repeatedly in the same area with other brassica crops to reduce disease buildup.

  • Excellent preceding crop for heavy-feeding vegetables and intensive garden beds.
