Meldon Seeds - Buckwheat Green Manure Seeds

Packet size - 1kg

Meldon Seeds Buckwheat Green Manure Seeds are a fast-growing, warm-season cover crop ideal for improving soil health quickly and naturally. Buckwheat establishes rapidly, suppresses weeds, attracts beneficial pollinators, and enhances soil structure, making it an excellent choice for gardens, small farms, orchards, and market growers.

Known for its short growth cycle, buckwheat can be grown and incorporated into the soil in as little as 4–6 weeks. Its dense canopy shades out weeds, while its root system helps mobilize phosphorus and other nutrients, making them more available for future crops. When turned under, buckwheat adds organic matter that improves soil tilth and moisture retention.

Whether you’re resting a bed between plantings or building long-term soil fertility, Meldon Seed’s Buckwheat Green Manure Seeds offer an efficient, chemical-free solution.

Key Benefits

  • Extremely fast germination and growth

  • Excellent weed suppression

  • Improves soil structure and organic matter

  • Ideal for summer cover cropping

How to Use Buckwheat as a Green Manure

1. When to Plant

  • Plant after all danger of frost has passed, when soil temperatures are warm (late spring through summer).

  • Buckwheat does not tolerate frost.

2. Soil Preparation

  • Remove existing weeds or crop residue.

  • Lightly cultivate or rake the soil to create a fine seedbed.

  • Buckwheat performs well even in low-fertility soils.

3. Seeding Rate

  • Broadcast at approximately 500 g per 100 sq metres.

  • Lightly rake or harrow seeds into the soil (¼–1 inch deep), then firm the soil for good seed contact.

4. Watering

  • Water after planting if soil is dry.

  • Buckwheat germinates quickly, usually within 3–5 days.

5. Growth & Management

  • Plants will flower in about 4–6 weeks.

  • For green manure purposes, terminate before seeds fully mature to prevent reseeding.

6. Incorporation

  • Mow, cut, or till plants into the soil while still tender (ideally at early flowering).

  • Allow 7–14 days for plant material to decompose before planting the next crop.

Tips for Best Results

  • Buckwheat is ideal for short fallow periods between crops.

  • Do not plant where frost is expected.

  • Works especially well before autumn vegetables or as a mid-summer soil rest crop.
